Why does someone become a ghost? If there are ghosts then do they only target a few individuals?
79Why does someone become a ghost? If there are ghosts then do they only target a few individuals? What is their purpose? And finally how do we react when we are actually confronted?
Boy this is not any easy question to answer, infact it's been the topic of debate around many a camp fire down through the centuries.
There are references to ghosts in every culture.
To say that I know why, how and what is there purpose would be playing the role of God almighty and I'm not God :0)
However, there is always a however! In my short life time upon this earth I have experienced the super natural many times; both good and bad and in my limited experience I will try to shed some light on the subject.
Ok, from my point of view everything has a starting point and also something to measure it by. And it is what we choose to use as our measuring method determines what we believe about what we are seeing or feeling,, confused yet :0)
Starting point...God is the creator of both Good and evil.
Measuring tool....everything is measured against God.
So God created life as I know it and with that he gave us free will. To either accept or reject him.
Those of us that accept him and let him love us unconditionally live on forever with him in heaven when we die and our souls go to be with him.
Those of us that reject his love and gift of eternal life in heaven go to a place called hell which is eternal separation from Gods Love.
Now Satan is the ruler of hell and because he wanted to take gods kingdom from him, God cast him down here to earth...so sad to say this is Satan's kingdom.
So then we who believe and accept Gods love through his son Jesus become full of his glorious light and therefore we become light in darkness.
In others words If Satan is Darkness and evil and the earth is his kingdom, then when we become christens we become light in darkness. Right!
Now I have never met a Ghost yet that has been full of light and Joy, nor heard of one, all the stories are of poor tortured souls and once in a while not, but most are and also they are all confined to haunt just one area, they do not seem to be able to relocate to another house etc. sounds like hell to me.
Interestingly enough when I have gone to someone's house and sensed their presence and then prayed and asked it to go in the name of Jesus and it has left or they...I just had this happen in the last year at a friends house...she had not told me about it. I was cleaning the carpets just before they moved in and could feel it very strongly and knew I was not alone. So I asked the Holy Spirit to show me how to pray and he did and it left. The next day when my friend arrived she told me the house felt so peaceful and so I told her what had happened and she told me that she and her grandmother had heard it walking around...it has never come back.
This has happened many times and each time as I seek God and call on the name of Jesus they leave and never return.
So in my experience, I believe (and i could be wrong ) and not everyone else believes ,,,Ghosts are poor tortured souls.
Now in the case of a loved one who just died coming into your room at night etc to say good bye or reassure you they are ok ...that seems to happen around the time of their death and never again, in my experience.
So country women I hope this has been of some help and if not ask some more:0)

I loved this Hub , it was a pleasant read and i voted it up ,useful,awesome,beautiful,interesting . But ..what about the children ghosts? people see ghosts of children ,as young as infancy .why would God not take them into heavan? why would an innocent child still be here? Thats what doesnt make sense to me. My mother is dieing , i pray with her,for her every night in hopes that God will take her when it is her turn, but although she s a lovely ,sweet kind and gentle person ,she is not a christian. sad but true. the bible says amongst 10 christians only one non christian will enter the gates of heavan ..so , i still have hope ... Voted up. I too have had experiences of a dark side. I never thought of the concept or applying that a trapped ghost is in hell. That is a good point and logical when you think about it Mike. I believe with our technology, we can now see these spirits, ghost, shadows, ect. We can catch them talking and actually see something. Personally, I believe in them and I believe it is proof that there is a God/Satan, light and dark, or good and evil. A very interesting article and written very well Mike. If God is the type of person who says Believe in me or perish, I don't think I want to believe in that type of being. But that's just me.
I find it funny how a lot of Christians or Catholics or whatever they're called laugh at the idea of vampires, aliens, or yes, even ghosts yet still believe in demons and angels.
But it's nice that you pray for the ghosts to "find the light". That's very kind of you.

Yesterday my daughter had a pretty unnerving experience. In her mirror she saw an image of someone different than herself. It seemed to morph and was frightening to my daughter. Then today I learned that my cousin's wife had died at about the time of my daughter's experience. What's interesting is that my daughter had only peripheral knowledge that this person was sick and in hospice, and she doesn't have a close relationship with the deceased. My daughter is 13 and has never reported anything like this before. She was very shaken after the experience.
The question I'm asking God is "What is the purpose of this?" Is there a message for me or my daughter. I'm not certain about the belief's of the deceased, I know she was a Methodist, but that could mean anything these days.
My daughter has recently rejected Chritianity and has been pretty open with my wife and I about it. I am heartbroken, but continue to pray. Is this experience an answer?
I haven't yet told my daughter about the coincidence of her vision and the death of our cousin occuring at about the same time. I don't want to cause confusion in my daughter or get distracted from God by my imaginations about this situation. Appreciate your prayers and wisdom.

I believe in God. However I don't believe our soul is created and in a cosmic blink of an eye can be beside him for eternity. I believe the plan is for our souls to evolve slowly overtime, from one life experience to another ascending through different dimensions. Leaving our current personality and memories behind. I think at this stage of life that our souls are "infants" and that there are "intermisions" between lives when we are evaluated and sent forth again for further spiritual evolution. I think our souls journey is alot longer than people would like to believe.

This has happened to me. My husband, being very sick, remained in a fetal position, did not eat or engage in converstions with me. during the last days of his life. About a month after his death, while asleep, God sent his face in my face. He appeared vibrant, healthy and happy. He appeared again bounding up the steps at the church in which we were married.

Since you have experiences with possession. someday, I would like to chat with you about this. One of my brothers is diagnosed with schizophrenia. He did alot of drugs in his past and probably currently too. He totally self-absorbed and selfish. He does not care whether he hurts other people's feelings, even his mother's feelings, and she has always tried to help him.
I also managed a group home for the developmentally disabled until just recently. Considering, they way some of the clients acted and thought, sometimes I would wonder, if in some cases, there is connection between mental illness and possession.

Great and fascinating hub. Many comments well worth considering. I have heard of pets haunting their owners, but only in a nice way, such as them 'jumping on the bed'.
I have also heard of Ghosts that are not tortured spirits, such as giggling laughing children, or mischievous ghosts re-enacting their real life personalities.
seamist made some great comments, such as the "replaying of actual events".
I guess we will never know the total truth, but I for one, do believe in Ghosts, in many forms and types. :)

Jen: 0) Great Synopsis on the subject! I love how you research a subject, that was a lot of work and a lot of it lines up with my personal experience. I like the part about angels and demons.
Demons I know are fallen angels that follow Satan and like Satan are not omnipresent and are sent out by Satan to posse’s people and in general create havoc... I have seen many come out of people when I have prayed with them. I never give them an audience, but just ask the Holy Spirit to guide me and they are terrified of the name of Jesus. The most important thing to remember about casting out demons (and it is Jesus who does it we are just a conduit) is to make sure you are right with God first other wise they can turn and attack you and I have seen this happen too.
As Satan is a great deceiver it is very important to pray and ask the holy spirit to give you discernment as to what is going on and to remember that you can not do this on your own strength as we will loose every time, but that the battle belongs to Jesus. On our own we are nothing and in him we are everything!!!!!!
I remember watching a program on the discovery channel about a guy who tried to perform an exorcism and he was violently attacked because he was not right with God and the same with some one who tried to rid a house of a spirit. When we are right with God we have a whole multitude of angels at our side and the best part is the battle belongs to Jesus!!!! Thank you Jen :0)

Hey I just remembered about 5 years ago I was going through a time of healing about my relationship with my mother. She had been dead about 6 years. Anyway her presence was so strong in the house it was late at night and I was dreaming of her in the most amazing way. It was so real and I woke from the dream and could feel her presence, I really thought she was there... I wept for a long time and told her I loved her and asked her forgiveness...it was Avery special time!!!

This is a synopsis I paraphrased about a book called, "The Case for Ghosts."
Although there are many kinds of paranormal experiences, there are essentially three main kinds of ghostly experiences. These are residual haunting, demons and angels, and ghosts. Residual hauntings are where a past event replays itself in a certain location. Angels and demons are spiritual entities that follow God or Satan respectively. And, ghosts are disincarnate spirits. Ghosts account for the majority of haunting and approximately one-third of Americans believe in ghosts.
J. Allan Danelek wrote a book called “The Case for Ghosts.” In his book, he explores what a ghost is and why they are here. He believes ghosts have three characteristics. The are the energy of a deceased human. They are interactive. They live neither in the physical realm or spiritual realm but somewhere in between. Some people believe ghosts are spirits of the dead. However, he believes they are the personality of a deceased person. Their personality or ego remains connected to the physical realm while their soul moves forward to the next experience.
In light of this, why do spirits become ghosts? Being a ghost is a choice of free-will. Furthermore, personality can pre-dispose one into becoming a ghost. Some ghosts are here because they cannot let go or they are fearful. Maybe they have unresolved anger over a past earthly event or they are too attached to someone or something. Perhaps they are fearful of being judged or fearful of the unknown. Other spirits stay to complete unfinished business or help their loved ones through the grieving process. The reasons are varied.
Regardless of the why the ghost is here, do they ever move on? Yes. Although some ghosts may live this way for many years, most eventually tire of it, or they have assistance in moving on. Either humans or spiritual entities can help assist them in moving towards the spiritual realm.

This has never happened to me, it's never had the chance, because all of the people I love in my life are still living.
But many whom I know relate this experience. And it is always puzzling to them, but never fearful. And it happens, mostly, only once. At or near the time of death of the loved one.
If I am here when I lose someone I love, I hope I have this experience.
