How I started Writing :0)
67
My grandfather was a playwright and died when I was 5 years old. He was sleeping at our house in Ireland, Dublin to be exact and Mom sent me into wake him for dinner. Well that was the last I saw of him as he had died in his sleep. My father never encouraged me to write or my mother...yet my favorite pastime as a kid was telling stories and escaping into my own make believe world. A world where I was in control, free to roam the wild, wild, world of my deep imagination.
For years, I would watch others and make up stories in my head about them, but never wrote them down. I had no mentor growing up in Ireland. Although I do remember a Uncle Bill My mother’s brother who would visit us once a year and take my brother Niall and I out on field trips to old castle`s and tell us wonderful stories of times past. I loved History
I often wonder if someone had taken an interest in me earlier what might have happened.
Then about 12 years ago, I was in a minor auto accident, (working too much) so I decided to take about 5 weeks of. During that time, I thought about my grandfather and his plays, one play stood out in my memory. It was called “the righteous are bold” The reason I remembered it was after he hand written it his best friend Frank Kearney stole it. Frank ran off to New York with it and it became a hit on Broadway.
My grandfather decided not to pursue the issue as He knew (A) frank would not be able to repeat the stolen success ( B) he would go to his grave knowing the work was not his own. Well I decide to go after Frank and Have my Grandfathers name Put were it belonged. After some research into the Irish Playwrights association, I met with success. They wrote me back to inform me they had changed the name, My Grand Father got the credit after all.
So Long story short after all that I decided I two had the gift of writing and began to write and write anything, nothing, and everything. I wrote on an old Neanderthal “IBM" word processor with prehistoric spell check, then graduated to the world of the Laptop. It was so easy because it was a natural gift...you either have it or you don’t and you make the rules!!!! :0)
Like most writers, I wrote about my past and once that was healed, dealt with, I began to write in the present. I can honestly say I am not influenced by any other writer, while I admire many of them. All my work is my own...besides the world does not need another Dickens, Tom Clancy, or Joyce it needs an original you and me!
So, go for it, have a blast, the world needs your voice, it’s been waiting a long time, and that time is now!

You're the inspiration I need. I'll have to bookmark to visit again and again, as I easily become discouraged. I find myself lost in the past looking for a voice my children/grandchildren can carry into the future.
Yes, Mike, you have the gift. Your stories are always good and this one touches the heart. Your Grandfather must be so proud to have his grandson champion for him. While we may not aspire to be someone else it is always nice to have a writer to look up to. I think your works fall in that category. I truly enjoy following you and your Irish sense of what is and isn't. Voted up and interesting.
Beautiful! Love how his name was given credit for it! :)
You got it Mike..you have to "just do it"...glad you are!
It was interesting to read about how you finally began writing. I find the personal journey of each writer quite fascinating. Unfortunately not too many parents support the idea of a child wanting to grow up and be a writer.
Nice story Mike. As you say just write and get it down on paper, as they say. I hear it all the time; "That everyone has a book in them". Everyone can write a story fiction or non-fiction, it dosen't matter just get it down on paper. With you being Irish you'll be able to tell a good tale. My parents came from a small village out-side of Newry and I spent my summer hol's on a farm and my two uncles where always telling me little stories where I believed every word to be true.
Once again nice story and keep up the good work.

Love your story. I applaud you for doing the right thing for your grandfather, at least that is my opinion.
All in all, I think you have the makings of a great writer. I was always told that the best writing comes from the heart (be it a sad heart or a happy one). The slick cookie cutter stories do make money but they lack the passion.
Again, I wish you well on your endeavors.
I loved what you had to say, Great article! Your words have encouraged me, and many, many others.
Thank you so much!
Great story, glad to hear your grandfather got named on his work in the end. It is true that sharing troubles halves them whether speaking or writing. I have been writing in a diary for several years now and it is a great way to relieve stress at the end of a day. I hope hubpages will bring out my creative flair over time and who knows maybe you will read my stories in the future as I have read yours today.

I'm glad you still write and also that you enjoy it.
There is a lot of inspiration in your writing. (I actually just read one of your comments, on an old Hub of mine, as I was responding to someone and thought I'd visit your profile again. That is how powerful your writing is.)
Best Wishes.
Hi Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. It's great to channel energy into writing remarkable pieces.
Hey Mike,
I see something here. It looks like your grandfathers mantle was passed to you. That don't mean you are him, but it means the gift or the annointing he operated in was given to you.
As with Elijah and Elisha, Elisha picked up the mantle of Elijah and proceded to do the same things but even greater. Elisha did not have to start over from scratch with the annointing. He went out with the help of Elijahs' annointing.
Great article. Yes, you have to purge the bad stuff before you can be creative or really productive. I do it from time to time... sometimes I just have to or I can't get any real work done!

Love seeing the words "new friend". You have delighted me more than you'll ever know or I can adequately express. Love and respect are definitely found here abounding in His love.
